October 2019
Ahhh,"fall".  We don't have leaves to rake, but October is one of the best months of weather in Arizona.  We enjoyed warm days and slightly cooler evenings and plenty of
sunshine.  We had a few "summer activities" still happening but things were slowing down a bit and then 'ramping up" again as the 'snowbirds' began to arrive.     A big
renovation had occurred at our park's main swimming pool over several weeks in September and October.  Our new park manager decided that the completion of the work
was a good reason to celebrate and an opportunity to get to know the residents, so he threw a "pool party picnic."  The park provided hot dogs and hamburgers and all the
trimmings for lunch and tossed plenty of beach balls and water toys into the pool.  The manager brought his family along to enjoy the day and for all of us to get to know
them.  We're loving our new manager!  (He has even joined one of the park's many baseball teams!)
Our sewing room was quite busy all summer and the summer residents were totally enjoying not having to share the space.  But as the good friends started returning a big
brunch was in order.  The ladies gathered at the patio adjoining the newest pool which had opened earlier in the summer for a delicious meal and a chance to catch up on
all the summer adventures..
One last trip was planned for the summer residents and we joined in the fun.  It was an early morning departure on a chartered bus and we headed to the Scottsdale Center
of Performing Arts..  The talent booking agency that our activities staff works with to schedule entertainment through the winter holds a two day extravaganza of talent and
invites various groups to come watch the many performances and choose their favorites. Starting at 9am, each act had 20 minutes to perform and the entertainment went on
to 4:00 with a break for lunch at noon.  There was quite a variety of talent and although the day was a little long, we enjoyed most of the acts.  On the way home we filled out a
form with our comments and favorites, so we'll see what shows up on the park's calendar next year.
Since we don't have any "trick-or-treaters" in the park, Halloween wasn't a big deal for us.  Instead, Mary participated in a "Quilt-Till-You-Wilt night with her sewing buddies.
They shared a great meal and about 50 ladies worked on various fun projects.  However, the park management got into the October mood by introducing us to a new
"resident" - Napoleon Bone-A-part.   We enjoyed seeing him around the park during the month.
Palm Creek has 36 beautiful pickleball courts and has hosted some big tournaments in the past.  This year we hosted "The Battle of the Branches" to benefit the Gary Sinise
Foundation.  Its always great to watch some really good pickleball players in action.
To celebrate our friends Marilou's and Harry's birthday they hosted a happy hour on the patio of their new home.  It was a great way to catch up with another group of friends
we hadn't seen all summer.
We had a great day for splashing and eating outdoors.
The newly paved pool patio is gorgeous.
Players representing the various military branches participated in
the three day pickleball tournament.
Opossums made from fruit!!
Our new Cottonwood Pool was a perfect setting for
our sewers' brunch.

Happy Birthday at a Happy Hour
Mary and some of her friends go to a local Starbucks inside a large supermarket every Sunday morning at the same time.    One of the other "regulars" is a gentleman named
Hugh.  Hugh is disabled and a caregiver brings him each week to enjoy some coffee together and then do their grocery shopping.  Occasionally Hugh's daughter, who is also
disabled, comes from California for a visit and the ladies have become friends with all of them.  The ladies had presented Hugh with one of our Veterans' "Quilt of Honor" last
spring.  When it was time for Hugh's 93rd birthday another little celebration was planned....quite fun!
Cake, coffee and laughter for a birthday!
A group of Mary's card buddies call themselves "The Witches" so
they dressed the part on Halloween!
And now the "season" begins!
